Landscaping Ideas to Beautify Your Outdoor Space

Filed Under (Home & Garden) by dna on 03-26-2009

No matter the size, if your home has a yard you are certain to get a lot more enjoyment from it if you undertake some interesting landscaping ideas. You can add a water feature or a rock garden, or create a secluded nook shaded by trees and shrubs. You can probably come up with even more own ideas of your to make your yard more pleasant and attractive.

Small English Backyard Garden

Small English Backyard Garden

One of the more popular landscape ideas these days is to create a walk-through garden. Carefully selecting the perfect flowers can lend color and charm to your outdoor space. A mix of annuals and perennials is ideal because it reduces your labor and cost while still allowing for the more colorful show that annuals provide. Investigate various kinds of shrubs and trees to provide contrast and balance. And place some stepping stones throughout the garden to encourage easy enjoyment of the surroundings.

Another great landscaping idea is to create different sections in your yard, each with a distinct feature, then unify the entire space by repeating certain aspects of each section in other parts of the yard. You don’t have to have a large yard to pull this off, either.

If children will be making use of your yard, designate a section of it as a play area for them to enjoy. A wooden play set will look more natural and blend in with the surrounding landscaping features. Adding a tree house lends even more interest to your outdoor space.

A lawn is frequently a big part of any landscaping effort. Choose a variety of grass that’s appropriate for your soil conditions and climate so you’ll have a luxurious expanse of green to set off your other natural features. Surrounded by trees, shrubs and flowers, a lawn can be an attractive showpiece.

Many people like to include a water feature in their yard. Ponds and waterfalls add a dramatic touch to your outdoor decor, and the sound of water is considered very soothing by many. There’s a huge variety of designs and products from which you can choose. Your only limits are your imagination, budget and available space.

A rock garden is a perfect solution for problem areas of your yard where it’s difficult for many plants to thrive. Maybe it’s a spot that’s too dry or the soil conditions won’t support plant growth. Or perhaps it’s an area that doesn’t drain well and is always wet and soggy. Putting in a rock garden that includes a few exceptionally hardy plants can be ideal for these problem areas. A rock garden can also be an attractive and low maintenance feature for any area of your yard.

There’s no doubt that landscaping can provide you with great enjoyment, both in the process and the final result. Do your research, get some professional advice if necessary, make a plan, and get going! That’s all it takes to turn your landscaping ideas into reality.

Feng Shui Baby’s Room Tips

Filed Under (Home & Garden) by dna on 02-19-2009

Woman with crib

feng shui room

You’ve probably heard of feng shui, the Chinese system for arrangement and placement of furniture in a room. It’s often used in businesses and homes as a way to create positive energy in your environment. Even if you’ve never used feng shui in your own space, why not consider it for your baby’s room? Feng shui is now making its way into the nursery, and for good reason, too. Feng Shui proposes that by arranging and aligning the room correctly, energy will flow better in the room. Positive energy flow will create an environment to thrive for people of any age, especially a baby.

To maximize the energy in baby’s room, there are several important factors to consider, such as room location, safety, colors, and furniture arrangement. Using feng shui items in the nursery will help to make babies less fussy, feel more comfortable in their surroundings, and be healthy and flourish. How do we accomplish this? Following some basic considerations will help both baby and parents create a room that makes both of them happy.

First of all, choose the best location you can for the baby’s room. A new baby should have a bedroom that is not over a garage and the room should not have an empty space below. The bedroom also shouldn’t be located where there is excessive noise that might keep the baby from sleeping, such as close to a living room where the TV is on, or close to a noisy street.

The bed shouldn’t be directly in line with the door or against a window. A wall that is near a bathroom, utility room, or storage should be avoided, if possible. Have soft music playing in the room, create soft energy and movement, and hang mobiles near a window where they will move gently in a breeze.

The baby’s nursery should always be clutter free. Nothing at all should be underneath the crib. Each night, the dirty diapers should be taken out so a clean, fresh smell circulates the room. An air filter would be beneficial, ensuring clean air all day long.

Building a Garden Pond for Koi Fish

Filed Under (Home & Garden) by dna on 01-29-2009

A bridge over a goldfish pond surrounded by foliage

Are you thinking of building a pond for keeping koi fish? Bringing these gorgeous fish in your backyard pond can be great fun and it is not as hard as most people imagine. With the proper pond maintenance koi fish live for several years and even decades, sometimes getting up to a meter long. Follow these suggestions to build your pond properly so your koi fish will live and multiply.

Depth is important

Depth of your garden koi pond is crucial. The minimum recommended depth is 4 feet, however it is much better to provide for your fish a six or even eight foot deep pond. This will ensure that your koi are protected from raccoons, pet kitties and other animals dangerous to fish. Deeper fish ponds also helps to keep water cool in summer months

Larger pond - happier fish

Small ponds are not suitable for koi. Remember, with time koi can grow quite large and they will need a big space. Also there are so many color variations of koi, that with time you will probably want to add more fish to your pond. So it is better to create a big garden pond from the start than rebuild it later. About ten thousand gallons is a good size for a koi backyard pond , bigger would be even better.

Heat the water in winter

Unlike tropical fish, koi are adapted to cold; however you should never let your pond freeze completely. Installing a proper heater for backyard ponds will always keep an opening in the ice. Also, keep in mind that koi only grow when the water is warm so with a heater your fish will grow faster

Provide your fish shade

When selecting a spot for your pond, make sure it is out of direct sun. Also, keeping water plants like water lilies in your pond is a good idea - not only do water plants add beauty to the overall look of your pond they also provide shade for the fish. However, you should avoid building your koi pond under trees. Cleaning a fish pond full of fallen leaves is no fun.

Plan to install a bird net

There are many birds of prey that will enjoy eating your koi. Don’t give them the opportunity. Plan your pond location so it is possible to protect it with a bird net.

Don’t poison your fish

When planning your pond keep in mind that you should not use any insecticides or herbicides near the water. Even a small amount of common garden poison can destroy your beautiful fish.

Get proper equipment for your pond

Several accessories are required for a healthy koi pond. Ideally you should get a water pump, filtration system, water aerator and an ultraviolet sterilizer. If the water in your pond is still, your koi might get sick and eventually die. Koi pond filtration systems are pricey, so as an alternative you can make your own homemade filters.

Bronze Casting

Metal Casting

Bronze Sculpture Of Praying Hands

Bronze has been the most sought-after metal for cast metal sculptures in bygone years. Bronze alloys have a desirable and unusual property to expand slightly prior to their setting. This helps a great deal in filling every corner of the mold. Their ductility and strength allow them to be molded into any form. However, bronze has a basic disadvantage of not being durable. Hence, there are hardly any traces of ancient bronze statues found. Bronze Metal Casting generally takes place by a process called lost-wax casting. Though, centrifugal and sand castings are also employed around 90% of bronze casting takes place through lost-wax casting.

Lost-wax method: Lost-wax Casting , in the industry, is better known as investment casting. It is costlier than die and sand Metal Casting , but outshines those methods in accuracy. It is easily possible to make complicated structures through ‘lost-wax casting’. The process can be described as follows:

Sculpting: First, the original artwork is created by the artist from clay, wax, or some other material. Since Clay and Wax have a retention of softness, you will see them being used most often.

Mold making: Majority of molds consist of 2 pieces, along with a shim placed between 2 halves at the time of construction in order to retain the mold accurately. The shim area is where the keys are stored. The small sculpture molds generally consist of plaster. Fiberglass can also be used. To have the minute details preserved on the surface of original artwork there is a mold inside. It is made up of vinyl, silicone, or latex supported by a plaster part of the mold. Generally, destruction of the original artwork takes place during the making of the piece. This is due to the solid nature of the original. The other reason is the rigidity of the original at the time of removal of the plaster mold. That’s why the original is cut off into thin, long pieces and separately molded. At times, a number of molds are required for recreating the original structure.

Wax: After the completion of the latex-and-plaster mold, the pouring of molten wax takes place. Then, swishing is carried out until a uniform coating is obtained. The thickness of the coating is 1/8 inches. Usually its the inner surface of the mold that gets covered by it. This process is repeatedly executed until the preferred thickness is attained.

Wax removal: Artwork’s ‘hallow wax copy’ is detached from mold. This mold may be reused by the artist for making more copies of wax, but its use gets restricted due to frequent ‘wear & tear’. Around 25 copies can be made for tiny bronze artworks.

Chasing: The chasing of each copy starts. Rubbing of the marks is done by a hot metal tool. The marks showing ‘flashing’ or ‘parting line’ are rubbed out.

Spruing: The spruing of copy generates paths to flow (for molten bronze) and causes air to move out.

Slurry: The dipping of sprued copy into a liquid silica slurry, and then into sand-like ‘stucco’ takes place. This process is repeatedly carried out till the coating attains thickness of at least ½ inch.

After these steps, the out-and-out processes like burnout, testing, pouring, releasing, metal chasing, and patinating are carried out.

Cheap GPS Systems

Filed Under (Electronics) by admin on 01-02-2009

View of a couple using a GPS device in rural setting

To help people find their way around today, there is the gps system. This is alternatively called a Global Positioning Satellite system. The gps systems use the satellites which have been made to help with navigation, tracking and location coordinates. You will be able to buy various items which have been equipped with the gps systems. As there is a wide range you may be able to find some cheap gps items to use.

This however means that you will need to see about the various features that are present in these devices. You should be able to observe the monitor interface clearly with a gps system. You’re new, low cost, gps interface must be able to give you clear maps which are easy to see. And also to switch from one section or feature of the map to another the touch screen should be in very good operating condition.

The different gps systems will also have varying prices which are dependent on the features which are embedded into the system. For the most part you should be able to find a cheap gps within the price range of about $100 to $400 USD.

The newer gps systems which have many new and improved features come in the price bracket of $999.99 plus. At the high end of the cost scale you can even find gps systems up to - you may need to sit for this - $2,000.00 USD. Now when you look at these price comparisons a gps of about $200 looks pretty good!

You will need to do some shopping and choose the cheap gps model which has all of the features that you want in a gps. These features should be a low price, an excellent quality touch screen monitor, a visible and an easy to read interface.

The street maps should also be clearly visible. Even if it is dark you can see them as the route and your actual location are highlighted. The various street names, railway crossings, hospitals, and other venues of importance should be shown and stated well. You should be able to hear the voice prompts which are part of the gps system clearly, regardless of the cost of the device.

As technology is meant to help us you should choose the items which will provide this help. While getting the newest products that are available can show your status and prestige you will need to pay a substantial price for this. A cheap gps on the other hand can give you all of the help you require for a fraction of the price.

Build A Mini Wine Cellar

Filed Under (Home & Garden) by admin on 12-14-2008

When you are passionate about wine you begin collecting it … and when you begin collecting it you need a place to store it.

Wine rack

A closet can easily be turned into a mini wine cellar to store your growing wine collection. Consider the position of the closet in relation to the outside walls of the house before you construct your wine cellar.

It is preferable not to turn a closet built against an outside wall into a wine cellar. The outer walls of your home can often be subjected to wide temperature fluctuations. Choose an internal closet where your wine can be stored in a more stable atmosphere.

The degree and the speed of any change in temperature are critical elements in successfully storing and aging wine. A gradual change of a few degrees from winter to summer won’t cause damage to your wine. The same change each day will harm your wines by aging them too rapidly.

The most important rule when you are storing your wine is to avoid large temperature fluctuations. You’ll notice damage of this nature straight away from the sticky deposit that often forms around the capsule. Over a period of time the continual contraction and expansion of the wine will damage the integrity of the cork. It’s just like having the cork removed and replaced every day. When this occurs, tiny quantities of wine can be pushed out along the edge of the cork (between the cork and the bottle neck) allowing air to seep back in. Once the air is in contact with your wine the irreversible process of oxidation begins and your wine is ruined.

At 55º to 58ºF the wine will age gracefully, enabling it to develop fully. Higher temperatures will age wine more rapidly and cooler temperatures will slow the aging process. Your wine will be irreversibly damaged if it is stored at a temperature above 82ºF for as little as a month.

The most difficult part of creating a wine cellar in a closet can be finding other places to store the original contents of the closet! But if you can store the closet contents elsewhere, or can get rid of all the present closet contents (one way or another), a closet wine cellar is the way to go for storage of your fine wines in limited space!

Wine racks can be purchased cheaply from a hardware store, online retailer or storage shop and you’ll have a simple but very effective mini wine cellar. Wine rack designs will vary in bottle density. Price variations have less to do with efficiency and more to do with appearance. Individual racking is the most convenient for selecting bottles. If you have racks against only one wall of the closet you may still have floor or shelf space available for wines that you purchase by the case.
